Call Me, the Accidental Tourist

Visiting places, and being away from home has always been a complete thrill for me. Whether I'm on a commuter train heading toward a weekend in Chicago, or heading off to an island vacation in Norther Florida the excitement is something I can almost roll around in my hand - the feel is such a heady joy and that my friend comes from the chance to discover new places and people!

On the same subject, you need to know that I don't simply hop a train or a plane...trips are few, but they're always trips of a life time! For me me exploring new places is a gift that when opened becomes the best there ever was.

This year I got to travel to a place that was totally foreign to this Midwesterner. From the clear, crisp air of fall here in Michigan I landed in a hot, muggy place of enchantment with more history, beautiful beaches and strange creature foreign to most of my part of the world. In October I went to visit my youngest son on an island in North Florida. I hadn't seen him for well over a year and was excited about seeing where he lived and spending time in his part of the world.

The plane touched down in Jacksonville to a day that was rainy, hot and more than a bit humid. What kind of a vacation was this?? As I looked out over a group of strange faces I saw my son with the warmest smile and I knew it didn't matter - it was going to be great. But I also had a sneaky suspicion it held some real surprises too. We grabbed the luggage and walked toward the entrance and it is then I saw his car. Though old it really was well kept up. I reached down to close the window - nothing happened. I immediately looked at my son, "What's with the window?" I asked in my calmest voice. He smiled, "Oh, the car was such a great deal that I thought I'll just get new window motors with the next paycheck!"

We drove from the airport with a warm rain pelting the car and I felt the warmth on my arm. I suddenly did something that I hadn't done since I was a kid, I leaned out the window and let the rain run down my face. I felt right then that this was going to be the beginning of quite an adventure - how else would it start but with a warm rain and a wonderfully less than perfect car.

We took the highway around the city and as we came closer to the island I saw the signs for our exit. Thankfully my hotel was just a few miles down the road and after dropping the bags in my room we climbed back in his car to go get the compact car I had rented for the week.

We pulled into the rental agency and went inside only to find that the car I had rented hadn't been returned yet. "Come back in an hour." we were told, "It should be back by then." We climbed back in the car and since it was dinner time headed off to the beach and to the restaurant where my son worked to get a meal.

We pulled in on the hard sand of the parking lot and walked up the steps of a lovely old restaurant right on the Atlantic Ocean. I was tired and so hungry and at that moment the place seemed to posses the charm of an old friend with it's old Florida colors and some wonderfully tasty smells. Lovely old wood floors seemed to move in a permanant wave mimicking the nearby ocean, and the friendly faces of my son's fellow workers soon created a cozy atmosphere and a great place to really land after my flight. We sat over bowls of fish chowder and buckets of boiled shrimp and talked into the evening and watched the rain looking out at the beach and surf.

Afterward we headed back to the rental place to get the car only to pull in to an empty parking lot - save one lone car, a PT Cruiser. Where was my compact? After what seemed an eternity of being on the phone, the agent found out that the car was still not available. "How about the PT?" he asked grasping at straws. "It is a four cylinder and will be good on gas." We soon agreed on the details and suddenly I found myself behind the wheel of a car that made me feel like I'd driven into the world of Gidget and the Big Kahauna. Okay, So I know that dates me but it really felt like after all that had happened that I'd stepped into some movie in 50s California. Though it sure wasn't California, and I certainly wasn't Gidget! Something felt totally funky - and totally right. I suddenly felt a real sense of freedom and I loved it! And with that feeling was a zany sense of just what this vacation might have in store.

From that moment on this vacation world unfolded in a totally grand way, and nothing happened as I'd planned, but it happened more like the unfolding of a really special dream. We spent hours talking on beaches and in parks along the rivers and estuaries. As we walked the cement-hard sand I felt a real adventure coming on - that is if I could let go and enjoy whatever came my way. Things were bound to occur that I hadn't planned and I needed to grab everything the mistakes and foibles that came and enjoy the days.

A that moment I gave in to a sense of child-like wonder that sometimes washes over you when though disconcerting and unpredictable, the events happening were so right. What ever was to come my way that week would become experiences to remember and savor like that fine meal that had begun my own personal adventure.

Winter's Still Here!

We have more snow coming tonight, and possibly more later this week. The temps are warmer, but it sure doesn't feel or look like spring! To some who are sick of winter this last hurrah of the season of cold, snow and frigid temps is just plain frustrating! But the warmth of spring the smell of the soil and the colors of those early flowers will come.

But now the season is the back and forth between winter and the mud and pot hole season. The pot holes in the road have grown in both size and number and the poor road commissions here up North are doing everything to keep up - but if you live here you know they're not. Some pot holes are canyons and you just have to drive like you're on some back road - slow and carefully.

But it isn't simply the holes that have our attention, it is the wet and the mud that seems to be everywhere. By the time this season is in full swing people are really beginning to compare which was worse, the snow and ice or the holes and the mud! And then with just a few warm days there are bits of green, and then the first bursts of color that break free from the those first attempts at spring.

I like winter, but those early spring colors are so special. I love those first touches that are truly signs of spring. It's when winter finally takes off the snowboots and puts on the garden shoes, and the wellies!

Delusional...

This year seems to be all snow so far...snow, and politics. What does that say I wonder? We have a saying here in Michigan that if the snow is lake effect snow, it's not real or as my husband says it's "delusional snow." As he plows he sometimes yells up at the clouds, "This isn't real! This is fake snow I'm plowing!"

Of course he's wrong...it is very real and so much so this year since we've had over 20 inches of the fake snow on our yard and drive as well as 3 times as much on all corners and at the end of the drive where both my husband and the local plows deposit more daily.

So what do these two have in common? Possibly that both the snow and politics ebb and flow with the season. Like the snow, politics is a seasonal thing that shows up for a year during the presidential election season, and the other Summer or November voting seasons are there and gone in a week or so.

Some of the elections are important to home and hearth, but so many are confusing and frustrating at best. Voting for an issue often can include dealing with the legalese that confuses in the voting booth - like having to vote no to say a simple yes to an issue.

The snow will pass, and so will the candidates. Let's hope at least that the ones who fade with the coming of spring are those we need to disappear!

Snowy Images

Weather. Where ever we live it affects our every day lives and sometimes our moods. For me weather tends to define the seasons and within each of the four there are variances that make them special. The weather today in Michigan has been filled with frigid temperatures and blinding snowfall that was driven madly by the winds.

Last night was all the things that make people shiver and dig deeper beneath their quilts, but for me it made for some vivid images that can make weather a true artistic delight. Under the golden glow of the street lights were swirling ghosts of snow that grew and shrank with the entrance and disappearance of those elusive flakes that sometimes seemed to gang up on the light and then simply evaporate as a spirit might in a ghost story.

Winter holds sway for this artist's heart - that is until Spring shakes her pollen over all the earth, and here in Michigan spring can excite any gardener as the green and early floral rash that breaks out, sometimes in profusion.

Everyone has a favorite season that stimulates images for memory and dreams, but for me the winter images are almost other worldly and really grand for times imaginings when the heat of summer overwhelm, or that empty quiet on any afternoon. It's those almost magical images that are the beginning of great stories, and I love them!

Even More - Super Wednesday!

No major leap ahead for the Democratic candidates, but it looks like McCain has a lead for Republicans. Funny how Super Tuesday kind of fizzled. In years past it has often put a candidate in the lead if not over the top, but this year it seems that there will be a nail bighter for the Democrats right up till the convention.

So what's next? There are 7 more contests before November. Almost like the constant football up to the Super Bowl, it really "ain't over...till it's over!"

Super Tuesday

Politics can drive you crazy. Especially during the craziness of a presidental campaign. I don't believe in politicians because no matter how hard they've tried there are lies in what they offer to those who vote. It's all for the love of the vote for them. Any promise, any baby to kiss all for the next vote - the next numbers gain.

For me the past presidential elections have either been voting for the lessor of two evils, or who can I write in here because I can't vote for either candidate. I know I'm rare here, and I'm not afraid to say that, but for someone who feels she should vote it can be a trying time. I know that power corrupts even the best of men or women and I've seen what a heady froth of power can do to those who have little self control, in fact we all have.

What's really special is super Wednesday, and the day after the November election when thing settle back down and maybe the frustrations of those who were driven by one candidate or another can settle a bit. I'm for the quieter news day, you know the one where there is simply war, pestilence...and peace.
