From This Moment On...

A month ago I stopped writing on my blogs. I just was no longer driven by my love of words and I needed the time to assess whether I even wanted to continue blogging. I’m not sure that I’m totally ready to begin again because nothing seems to draw me in to explore or discover like it use to, but I think I need to at least test the waters once more.

As I sit here this evening I’m listening to Radio Celt and the wonderful traditional tunes they share all the time online. Music has always been one of the real passions in my life. The notes from the strings, the pipes, as well as the heartfelt words the balladeers and instrumentalists are the only thing holding tight to my heart and mind at the moment.

You see, that is the extent of my life today…well, not quite because I am still a grandmother and mother and I’m spending quite a bit of time serving those little ones who need the ride to school or I’m there as the occasional babysitter, too. I have only a few moments to write and I am sad to say that I really don’t miss it as much as I thought I would.

Like many these days I find my heart is in the music and usually find myself working out daily difficulties through some fiddle tunes as well as the jigs and reels that flow to my ears and heart through my iPod Shuffle.

So, this is my long way of saying that I will be by my blogs to share a note or song from my heart, but it will not be as often as I use to because my life and its purpose is in flux and changing daily. I’m not yet sure where this new path will take so I hope you’ll bear with me.

Oh, and Go raibh maith agat as do chuid ama, (Thank you very much,) - for being a listener to my past written madnesses and also for the scribblings that are to come. I hope you’ll still be with me as we move forward and try to discover how this hand plays out, together.

Make it a Shared Christmas

A wish list...that's what we all have, especially this Christmas. I can remember as a kid growing up in a rather poor family the wish lists that I would create were changed nightly and stuffed in my pillow case because none of the wishes could ever happen. The funny thing is I wrote them every year and would sneak them down into the burning fire in our fireplace hoping somehow they'd make it all the way to the North Pole.

Today the lists aren't as extravagant and are more realistic. They have to do with many of the people I care about and know, and even some I just barely know. My list this Christmas are for those who are in need in one form or another - a son who is severely injured after a car accident to finally get the social security so his family doesn't lose everything; a bit healing for a friend with MS; a fair shake for a friend who has lost her long term disability as the sole breadwinner for her family, there are just so many in need and with economic mess we're in there are so many losing everything.

Life isn't easy. It was never suppose to be but that is where we come in as caring people in a hurting world. We Americans have the wrong idea - it's not all suppose to be happiness - that's different than pursuing happiness (The Declaration of Independence). We need to find some contentment and a little peace in our lives.

Peace isn't things, it is relationships, family, and sharing those every day burdens. Sharing the weight helps make them lighter, and laughter and fellowship are the best for healing so let's make these Holiday Season one filled with sharing, laughter and togetherness, not simply objects that people forget after the first of the year.

A Gift

Lovely, soft and warm
Touch the fuzzy head
Feel the wonder.

Count the moments,
Savor the whole.
Watch the stretching,
Growing strength.

All the premieres,
All the aches
Mini or major
They are pains for all.

All still tell the tales,
The softness still exists.
Now it emanates from
The heart, the soul

That.is.the.very.best.gift.

Writing and More Writing!

What makes a blog important enough to make it to the best of the best, or the most evocative, or even the most interesting? Is it the content or how the author creates the string of words that complete the thought within what is written? Questions, questions, questions...as a writer I have had to look at what is interesting in what I read and what I write. I think on most blog pages it's how far can you go in anger or word use not in what is actually said. Does that mean that a theological treatise or anything else academic is better? Heavens NO! The other end of the scale can be just as frustrating as those that try to shock us. So what makes something a good piece of writing? In my opinion well thought out and developed ideas that take you from an idea to a conclusion of some kind. A piece that has an interesting way of grabbing attention at the beginning and holding it throughout with humor or using a different way of presenting ideas can capture and hold a reader's interest.

For me, someone who is well informed and not simply angry gives me a reason to continue to read on in any piece of writing. Some of the best writings that I've experienced have often been to persuade me to change an opinion or idea that I hold. It doesn't always make me change, but it does always make me re-examine what I believe and that is what a good persuasive piece of writing should do.

Without humor or something that catches you off guard most writing has little to peak my interest. An example for me is a very well know writer of literature who has a good way of taking you in circles with her descriptions but leaves you hanging as to a purpose for the piece, or simply a story line that will take the reader into a piece. Though wonderful at taking a reader into the character the author seems to be going in circles as to what they are saying or why. Every author has a purpose; a reason for writing. Many of us do it to blow off steam or tell of wrongs done in our world. How many of us write to tell of someone or something that has touched us in our days?

A good writer is not always grammatically correct, but they are always true to the characters, or ideas that hold their own interest. I'm a writer because I love to see where my ideas are going on a page, and always they grow like children on my page. That's like life. Each day they grow, and change with each telling. Not because we're changing them, but often because as we contemplate what happened from our own perspectives more information comes to light. We each have our own truths and they become what we believe. That occurs through what happens in our lives. As for me...I may not be a Hemmingway, or Faulkner but I too must write. It is for me simply a way of thinking and communicating.
